How I Learned That True Success Isn’t About Grinding 24/7
Have you ever felt like you’re on a hamster wheel, constantly running but never really getting anywhere? That was me, caught up in the relentless cycle of hustle culture. But here’s the truth bomb I’m dropping today: hustling 24/7 isn’t the key to success or happiness. In fact, it might just be holding you back.

The Intoxicating Allure of Hustle Culture

Growing up during the SaaS boom of the 2000s, I was surrounded by the mantra of “hustle harder.” The poster child for this mindset? None other than Harley Finkelstein, the COO turned President of Shopify. He was the embodiment of hustle, even sporting fake tattoos with #hustle at events.

Don’t get me wrong, Shopify’s story is incredible, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with putting in hard work. But somewhere along the line, we started glorifying the grind itself, rather than the results or the joy of creation.

The Addiction of “Busy”

Here’s a hard truth: saying you love the hustle is a lot like an addict saying they love crack or heroin. Trust me, I know. I’ve been there with my own addiction to weed. I told myself and others that I needed it to be creative, to relax, to function. But in reality, I was just masking deeper issues and avoiding the hard work of personal growth.

Similarly, hustle culture can be a way of avoiding the scary question: “Am I actually happy with what I’m doing?”

The Maker’s Dilemma

As a maker, what really drives me isn’t the hustle — it’s creating things of value for people. It’s about having meaning in life and making an impact on the world. But in the race to be seen as successful, we often lose sight of this.

Take my current projects, for example. With aro.work, I’m exploring the future of work through augmented reality offices. And with turboship.co, I’m creating boilerplate SaaS using AI. These projects excite me because they’re about innovation and adding value, not just grinding for the sake of grinding.

The AI Revolution: A New Hope for Makers?

Here’s where things get interesting. The AI revolution isn’t just about automating tasks or replacing jobs. It’s about empowering makers to do more of what they love and less of what they don’t.

Imagine a world where AI handles the grunt work, leaving you free to focus on the creative, meaningful aspects of your projects. It’s not about hustling harder, but about working smarter and more joyfully.

Breaking Free from the Hustle Trap

So how do we break free from the allure of hustle culture? Here are a few lessons I’ve learned:

  1. Redefine success: It’s not about how many hours you work, but the value you create and the life you build.
  2. Embrace the power of rest: Creativity and innovation thrive when you give your mind space to breathe.
  3. Focus on impact, not busyness: Ask yourself, “Am I just being busy, or am I creating real value?”
  4. Use technology wisely: Tools like AI can help you focus on what truly matters. Embrace them.
  5. Listen to your joy: If you’re not enjoying the process, it might be time to reassess your path.

The Future of Work is Joy

The future of work isn’t about hustling harder. It’s about finding joy in what you do, creating meaningful value, and using technology to amplify your impact.

So the next time someone tells you to “rise and grind,” remember this: True success comes from alignment with your values and joy in your work, not from burning yourself out on the altar of hustle culture.
